Nitrous Oxide Sedation

  • Nitrous Oxide aka laughing gas is the least invasive of all dental sedation. Majority of patients can utilize it safely with no side effects. It is administered through a small mask placed over the nose and taken in by simply breathing in through your nose
  • You will feel relaxed within a few minutes. Often patients go through a phase of silliness and giggling.
  • Oxygen only is used during the last 15 minutes of your procedure to completely flush the Nitrous out so the patient is able to leave the office on their own and go about their normal day.

Oral Sedation

  • Sometimes called “conscious sedation,” oral sedation is given in pill form. These are anti-anxiety medications to help you relax during the dental procedure.
  • Depending on the patient’s situation a prescription is given for two doses. One to take the night before and the other to take in office under the care of the treating dentist.
  • A patient will still be awake and conscious, able to answer and respond to questions but will feel heavily groggy and sleepy. Some patients have described it as being in a “dream state.”
  • Patient’s that chose this option must have a driver bring them to and from the office since the oral sedation takes a few hours to wear off. The patient is in no case to drive themselves after oral sedation has been administered.

IV Sedation

  • IV Sedation is an option which must be discussed beforehand with your treating dentist. There is an on-site anesthesiologist that administers IV Sedation and stays with the patient to monitor through completion of the dental procedure.
  • This is an option for those with severe anxiety. Medication is administered through an intravenous needle in your arm and the dose is monitored throughout your procedure.
  • You will likely forget the entire procedure afterward and is a deeper level of sedation.
  • Patient’s that chose this option must have a driver bring them to and from the office.
